FAQs
Mathematics Proficiency Test (MPT)
Who is required to complete the MPT, and who is exempt?
Please refer to the Ontario College of Teacher website for a detailed list of College applicants and members who need to complete the MPT, as well as those who are exempt.
What is the passing requirement for the MPT?
To be successful on the MPT, applicants are required to score 70% or higher on each component of the test (mathematics and pedagogy) in the same attempt.
How do I register for a test session?
Applicants can book test sessions as soon as the sessions are available on the test session booking page. It is the applicant’s responsibility to book a test session. Test sessions are booked on a first-come, first-served basis. Applicants who want to participate in a session that is full can go on a waiting list or can book a test session at another date, time or location.
How is the MPT administered?
The MPT is administered in person at an approved test centre or proctored remotely. Test administrators at the approved test centres determine when, where and how applicants will attempt the MPT by creating test sessions. The dates, times and format of available test sessions are viewable to applicants when they book their test session through their Test Applicant account.
What content is covered on the MPT?
The MPT is composed of multiple-choice questions and consists of two components:
- Mathematics content from Grades 3 to 9, which includes some no-calculator and some calculator-enabled items
- Pedagogy component assessing the applicant’s knowledge surrounding a foundational understanding of the mathematics curriculum, assessment and evaluation practices, and learning for all students
In addition to the two components of the MPT, applicants can complete an optional questionnaire consisting of identity-based questions, and a Mathematics Attitude and Perceptions Survey.
How can I prepare for the MPT?
Resources (Mathematics Content Resources and Pedagogy Resources) are available on the MPT website. Applicants should also try the online practice test to become familiar with the platform and the types of questions that will be asked. Additionally, applicants can register for free webinars that offer valuable insights into the registration process, assessment format, available resources, what to expect on test day and the technical requirements for participating from a remote location.
How many times can I attempt the MPT?
There is no limit on the number of times applicants can attempt the MPT. Applicants can only be registered, or be on the waiting list, for one session at a time. Applicants are able to register for an additional attempt only after they have received results from the most recent attempt.
How will I receive my MPT results?
Within 10 days of completing the MPT, an Applicant Report with the result will be available on the applicant’s account on the MPT site. Applicants will also be notified by e-mail that their test result is available on their MPT account. For each attempt of the MPT, an Applicant Report will indicate whether the applicant’s status is “Successful” or “Not Yet Successful.”
